As I sit in my office here in Idaho the temperature outside is a balmy 1
degrees. I’m wearing wool socks snugly fit into snow boots, flannel lined
pants, and a thermal top with a fleece jacket. Winter is here my friends and
the older I get the less I like it, my idea of a white Christmas involves
white SAND, not snow.
Like its predecessors, 2007 is now just a blur of memories; bobber fishing
with John and Mark on the North Platte. Streamer fishing with Rooster then
after standing in the rain and eating awesome elk burgers with Colleen in
Twin Bridges; Carp fishing with Melinda and Danny; fishing the Beav with
Matt; standing around in 105 degree heat with J.Y. Chris and Amy; proving to
Gibson that Idaho has bigger fish than Montana; visiting Tim in Libby and
Ned in CDA; having Galloup call me 10,000 times asking, “what have you done
today to win the One-Fly?” Laughing as a 9 year old out fishes me on the
South Fork all the while telling his dad where, when and what bank he wants
to fish; schooling Hinman on the Missouri via Dave Bloom and the guys at the
Trout Shop.
Topping things off was spending 10 wonderful fishless days on
the Salmon River with my wife.
It intrigues me that my memories are not of fish totals or patterns used but
of those who I had the opportunity to spend time with on the water.
2008 is just beginning and plans are already being formulated for yet
another year worth of memories. For those of you over the years that have
repeatedly invited me for a day of fishing, answer the phone it’s me.
If you are a movie buff check out Sean Penn’s film “Into the Wild”, it is an
adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s biopic of Christopher McCandless adventures and
untimely death alone in the Alaskan wilderness.
To my many friends that have called, left messages or e-mailed me over the
last few months, thank you….
