"Fly Fishing the Northwest Show."

On September 26, 27 & 28 the Oregon Council of the Federation
of Fly Fishers will put on a fly-fishing show in Seaside, Oregon.
The show, called "Fly Fishing the Northwest", will
be held at the Seaside Convention Center. Besides displays of
fly-fishing products from many manufacturers, there is also a
schedule of 10 different clinics and workshops available Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. Included in the clinics and workshops are
instruction on fly tying, fly-casting and fishing techniques.
Clinic and workshop instructors include Alec Jackson, Ron Lauzon,
Lee Clark, Chuck Cameron and Gordon Mackenzie. Other notable
program presenters will be Rick Hafele, Jim Schollmeyer, Henry
Hoffman, Joe Warren, Art Lingren and Phil Rowely.
Workshops
at the fly fishing show will
include a wide variety of
fly tying. These
are some favorite sea-run cutthroat patterns.
Clockwise
they are, Spruce, Dead Chicken,
Purple Joe and Borden Special.

Bamboo rod makers will also have a mini-conclave during the
show. This could be a great opportunity to take a look at some
nice bamboo rods. I plan to take a couple of my older bamboo
rods along. Remember, there should be sea-run cutthroat in the
Necanicum River. Catching them on bamboo is the way to go.
These
are two English made bamboo fly rods.
On the left is a
Hardy Midge, on the right is
a rod made by R. James of
Alnwick.

There will be a mini-symposium of bamboo rod builders at the
"Fly Fishing the Northwest" show.
I'll have a 16' Fly Fishing Bench model on display
at the show. The plan is to have it on the water so you can give
it a test row. At the oral auction, on Saturday evening, the
boat will be available as a fund raising item for the Oregon
Council. This will be a great chance to get a ClackaCraft boat
at a good price and help support the FFF.
Show hours run from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. on Friday and
Saturday. Sunday hours are from 9:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. Those
hours should provide a little time to sample the local fishing
in the Necanicum River. Besides the sea-run cutthroat there should
be some Coho (silver) salmon available. For sea-runs I like a
4 or 5-weight rod. Fly patterns like Spruce, Purple Joe and Dead
Chicken will all work. My all time favorite sea-run cutthroat
pattern is the Borden Special. For silver salmon I like 8 or
9-weight rods, and I always carry a variety of fly lines from
floaters to fast sinking types. Fly patterns run the gamut from
size 1/0 or 2/0 marabou/flashabou and leech patterns to size
6 or 8 sparse Comet style flies.
